Creditor
A creditor is the company or individual that extends credit to another company or individual, called a borrower.
In other words, there are two parties in a credit relationship: a creditor and a borrower.
In practice, the creditor is often a bank that, for example, makes an overdraft or an authorized overdraft available to their customers. The credit can be of longer or shorter duration and can either be with or without installments.
Credit relationships also occur when a private company chooses to provide shorter or longer credits to their customers - for example, in the case of goods purchases where the company only requires payment after 7, 10 or 30 days.
Several stores and companies have also started to offer loans or credits where the customer can borrow, for example, DKK 50,000 to buy goods and repay the amount over a period of time.
The word 'creditor' is synonymous with 'lender' and basically means the same thing: an individual or company that provides loans to a borrower.
The creditor's risk
All creditors assume credit risk when they extend credit to a borrower. This risk affects banks, lenders and private companies that extend credit for the purchase of goods.
All credit and loans are associated with the risk that the borrower will not repay all or part of the credit/loan - for example due to a change in financial circumstances, bankruptcy or death.
Creditors can never be 100% protected against losses, which applies to both banks and private companies. But fortunately, the creditor can take a number of precautions that can minimize or limit the risk of loss.
Examples of these precautions are a thorough credit check or KYC (Know Your Customer).
In addition, the right credit terms (maturity, installments, etc.) can also help minimize the creditor's risk.
