A lead is a potential customer or prospect for a company or organization. The lead typically needs to be processed by marketing or sales - or a combination - to become a customer.

Leads are created in many ways, either through extracts or typically in the form of marketing, where leads have shown interest in your product or service in one form or another. It is then the job of the sales organization to convert these leads into customers.

What is a lead list?

A lead list is a list where leads appear - for example, from campaign extracts, social media or other sources where a lead has provided their information.

Lead lists can be generated in many ways with different sources as the basis for these lists.

Lead lists can be individuals, companies or organizations.

How do you get leads and lead lists?

There are many ways to get leads, but a typical method is to create a campaign or marketing initiative where the lead has to provide their contact details - for example, to get a gift, a test drive or something completely different.

Sales can then work with this information and hopefully convert it into customers.

Hot and cold leads

The terms "hot leads" and "cold leads" are often used, where temperature naturally refers to how interesting the leads are.

If a lead is cold, they are often not interested in your product or service, while warm leads are closer to becoming customers.
